around him was unfamiliar territory, and the land was under the rule of a rival elven king. Even elves fought over minor matters, his ada told him. Rivalries were rare, but when they occurred, they were often serious.
Estel had never met any elves of the forest. Wood elves who lived in trees fascinated him, but they livedhim with a curious interest that Estel wondered if he should like or not.
“You are no hobbit,” the elf suddenly spoke in Sindarin, not expecting to be understood.
“Of course not,” Estel replied in like manner, sin further to the south. His adar had spoken of elves who lived in these parts, and they lived in caves. That was way too fascinating for words. He wondered what they looked like. Were they dirty and covered in dust? Were they dwarves in disguise?Estel looked up and gasped. There, before him, stood an elf... a stranger. Auroa was sat beside the window of her mother’s hospital room looking out at the busy world below. She could not understand how everyone in the world could carry on as usual when in the very room that she was sat somebody was dying. To her life seemed to have come to a standstill and the pain she felt would last forever.
She glanced to her left at her mother’s lifeless form, watching her once familiar face for any signs of life, but the beautiful face of Catharine Melion was deathly pale and hidden with ugly cuts and dark bruises that covered the beauty. Her pale gold hair was spread out across the pillow
When Auroa was younger she could listen for hours to her mother telling her great tales of elves, draws and men fighting battles, winnin and seemed to glow in the pale morning light. Many times Auroa had found herself wishing she looked more like her mother because although her hair was blonde it was much darker than her mothers and turning brown. Slowly, he raised his head up not wanting to appear awake as he searched the dark. Estel had no trouble locating the source of his unease, because there, in a nearby tree, were two glowing eyes staring his way. His mind relaxed, realizing that a guard probably had been placed to watch them as the day approached. It was still too dark to really see anything more then its eyes, himself.
He quickly glanced around, searching for the missing watcher. Estel’s breath caught in his throat when he found a pair of glowing eyes floating in the air above thso Estel tried to return to sleep.Nevertheless, sleep would not take him again. He could not shake the remaining feeling that kept the hairs raised on the back of his neck. With as little movement as possible, he again took in his surroundings. He had the feeling that something was amiss, but could not figure out what it was. Suddenly, he realized what it was. The pair of eyes that had been watching them from afar was gone! A bad feeling grew in the pit of his stomach.Where would the guard have gone and why? He questioned e prince.

Appearing from the top of a giant oak that stood directly in front of the elf a large black spider slowly made its way down from the tree top it was one of the largest spiders he had ever seen its massive bulk making it difficult to maneuver down the trunk.
It was bold and deliberately made itself known to the elf drawing the prince’s attention it kept its many eyes upon him as if enjoying the drama of the moment.

Frodo nodded, taking a deep breath of the valley’s refreshing air, redolent with pine and flowers and ‘Elf magic’, as Sam said. It was quiet here, so far from the river -- save for bird song, and the scurrying and chattering of squirrels dashing about on important business of their own.
“Mr. Frodo!” Sam called out. He dashed over, his arms full of exotic blooms. “Are we moving on?”
“Just a bit further,” Frodo said with a smile. “What have you got there?”
“I don’t know their names yet,” Sam said, his face alight with excitement. “Have you ever seen or smelled the like? Look at these orange-and-pink ones, and these tiny yellow ones. Just soft as butter, they are.” He knelt by a second basket, lifted the lid, and beamed at how thoroughly it had been emptied. “Is it all right if I put them in here, sir? I’d like to ask Mr. Legolas what they’re called.”
“Of course , taking the heavier basket from Merry and handing over the lighter one.
“Sam, you’re going to have to let me carry something sometime,” Frodo protested.
“Maybe tomorrow,” Sam said stubbornly. He stuffed the blanket into his pack, put it on, and you may,” Frodo said gently. Sam was still quite wonderstruck and shy around most of the Elves, but he and the young Wood-Elf, Legolas, discovering a mutual love of flowers and gardens, had formed an unlikely friendship.Sam happily loaded the basket with the flowers and sprinkled them with water from his bottle. Merry shoo’ed Frodo to his feet so he could fold up the blanket, which Sam promptly took from him.“Now Mr. Merry, you can carry this,” he said firmly

Idril lowered her gaze to the ground. "I do apologize, Your Highness, but I am not at the liberty to tell you. I-"
"Legolas," he corrected. Idril met his eyes, and Legolas found he could not look away. Her eyes were a deep green with specks of brown around the iris. He had never seen eyes like hers. They were like a forest, and Legolas was mesmerized. A faint blush rose to her cheeks, and Legolas was almost sure he heard her heart rate speed. A cry from Jaden snapped them back to reality. Idril gently took her brother from the prince's arms.
"I think someone is ready for bed," she muttered.

"Of course," she answered, with a small smile. The blush on her cheeks deepened. "You are welcome here anytime. Legolas."

They moved out of the house and past the tree with its curtain of all-concealing leaves, and walked down to the river.
Mary watched Serafina Pekkala with a mixture of wariness and admiration: she had never seen a human form so slender and "If you could see him," Serafina went on, "you would see a black bird with red legs and a bright yellow beak, slightly curved. A bird of the mountains."
"An Alpine chough... How can you see him?"
"With my eyes half-closed, I can see him. If we had time, I could teach you graceful. She seemed younger than Mary herself, though Lyra had said she was hundreds of years old; the only hint of age came in her expression, which was full of a complicated sadness. They sat on the bank over the silver-black water, and Serafina told her that she had spoken to the children's daemons."They went looking for them today," Mary said, "but something else happened. Will's never seen his daemon. He didn't know for certain that he had one.""Well, he has. And so have you."Mary stared at her.
